Two martinis on a table at a high-end bar. One martini has a lemon twist and olive.

Most people know the name, James Bond. The sophisticated British spy character may have single-handedly elevated the martini to among the most recognized cocktail ever. He always ordered the vodka cocktail and who can forget the line, “shaken, not stirred.” Some may question whether his martini used gin instead of vodka, but several sources confirm vodka was the preferred alcohol.

Not everyone enjoys martinis and business meetings that include the “three-martini lunch,” have disappeared, much like the rotary telephone. Still, vodka cocktails continue to thrive beyond the martini.

Feeling a Little More Whimsical?

Another vodka cocktail that received attention from Hollywood was the Cosmopolitan. This drink enjoyed renewed interest around the turn of the century thanks in part to the show, Sex in the City. It remains a popular drink today.

Many vodka cocktails use a variety of juices to provide a different flavor to complement the vodka. For example, the cranberry spritzer uses cranberry juice and a lime wedge. Pineapple juice combines nicely with vodka for a pleasant tropical twist. Same goes for grapefruit. Combine the grapefruit juice with vodka along with some sparkling water and you have a very tasty and refreshing summertime drink.

Ever have a Moscow Mule? This delicious drink pairs vodka with ginger beer and lime juice. Even the copper mug it is served in enhances the experience by keeping the drink frosty cold. Some mixologists even say that the copper contributes to the flavor and aroma of the cocktail.

The Breakfast Vodka Cocktail and More

The Bloody Mary may have been the first of the exotic nontraditional vodka cocktails. The drink is attributed to a bartender at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, who came up with the idea of combining canned tomato juice with vodka, Worcestershire sauce, peppers (black and cayenne), lemon and a splash of Tabasco sauce. Bloody Marys are for some, a go to remedy for a hangover and often a morning beverage at festive occasions.

Other vodka cocktails include a White Russian, Long Island iced tea, a Harvey Wallbanger, sex on the beach, woo woo, caipiroska and a host of many more.

A New Era of Cocktail?

Today’s mixologists frequently go beyond the realm of traditional vodka cocktails. Many offer more exotic and adventurous ingredients, such as espresso, spices, and unique liqueurs. With that in mind, what is your favorite vodka cocktail? Let us know.
