Searching for the best gins reminds me of an old joke. Did you hear the story about the economist experiment? Several researchers gathered all economists from around the world and had them lay end-to-end.
The result? The economists never reached a conclusion. I know—it is a bad joke. However, people wanting to label gin, wine, or distilled spirit as the best never reach a conclusion.
You may come closer than the economist joke, but let’s face it—everyone has their idea about gin and what they consider the best. Many people, when it comes to best gins, even avoid the conversation because the taste of gin conflicts with their palette. Gin is an acquired taste that some prefer to avoid.
Some even consider gin somewhat old-fashioned, something made in a bathtub during Prohibition by Al Capone and other gangsters. Many of the best-known cocktails using gin do indeed come from that era. However, like many once-popular items, gin cocktails have again gained new enthusiasts.
Piney Flavor or New and Improved?
Still, others embrace the “piney” flavor typical of most gins. Yet, the gin varieties capturing the attention of a new audience have a slightly new twist. Some distillers blend in other flavors, such as citrus, or botanicals like lavender, muting the pine taste. Therefore, selecting one or two gins distilled in Wisconsin and labeling them “best gins” is nearly impossible.
Therefore, the Best Gins are. . .
You may find that a large group of like-minded gin enthusiasts may agree that one variety may achieve the distinction of being called the best gin. However, many others will disagree and promote their favorite as best gins.
But guess what? It does not matter. The title of best gin in Wisconsin is, and should be a personal decision.
So, if you choose to enjoy gin from a Wisconsin distiller and call it among the best gins you ever tasted, fantastic! That gin may be the one you choose to drink for the rest of your life. Then again, you may find gin even better at another distillery. And that is great because the one who determines the best gins is you (not what others want you to drink). If you are happy about that beverage, nothing else matters.
What do you think? Have you suddenlydeveloped a thirst for a martini or gimlet (yes, these drinks use gin), or is your inner Roaring 20s calling for a Negroni or even a Singapore Sling?
Then, go to one of Wisconsin’s many wonderful distillers and toast your good taste with the best gins. Of course, be responsible as you enjoy that gin.
