The Best Gin Cocktails According to MOST

MOST? Huh? MOST what? MOST is an acronym for my guide (yours may be different) to determine the best gin cocktails. MOST stands for Mood, Occasion, Season and Temperature. I used to have a go-to gin cocktail. But after years of staying in the conservative lane of gin drinks, I decided to do a little experimenting. And what I discovered is that there is more to gin cocktails than a gin and tonic or Tom Collins. Then came the MOST revelation and a whole new world of gin cocktails opened before me.
Still, many well-known gin cocktails date back to when my dad was young. While not a bad thing, it is interesting, as most classic gin cocktails remain popular today. Choosing the best gin cocktails has little to do with what any expert says. The best gin cocktails (like the best gins) are what you enjoy. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. However, finding the best gin cocktails to drink works considerably better when you apply MOST.
Mood is Critical
One can interpret mood several ways. However, this formula dictates that mood reflect the atmosphere of the situation. It also goes hand-in-hand with occasion, but not always directly in lockstep. For example, a situation considered formal may require a more sophisticated approach to gin cocktails. Another situation where the atmosphere is light and fun loving probably demands a different style of gin cocktail. The mood of the situation often dictates the cocktail type for the setting.
The Occasion Plays a Large Role
You probably do not plan to wear a clown costume to a funeral or a tuxedo to an outing on the beach. Likewise, not every gin cocktail is appropriate for the occasion. Another way to decide on the type of cocktail is by knowing (understanding) the audience with whom you will share a cocktail. Drinking something you consumed in your early 20s to feel good might not fit the audience you want to impress. The bottom line is, understand the occasion before you order the best gin cocktails.
Tis the Season that Determines the Cocktail
I associated gin with summer when I was young. While that is not necessarily wrong, it definitely is not right, either. The best gin cocktails are those that align with your preferences and the season (time of year) in which you drink it. Plenty of cooling, refreshing gin cocktails exist for summer, but what may surprise you, is the number of cocktails for the cooler seasons of fall, spring, and yes, even winter. It turns out that with a few modifications, some well-known recipes can warm you on nights when the winds howl. Therefore, always make a seasonally appropriate cocktail request and you are sure to look like someone who knows their gin cocktails.
Baby, it's Cold Outside--Understanding the Value of Temperature
Okay, I admit it. My heading is motivated by the current weather conditions. I just saw my first snowflakes. Regardless, the chill in the air does offer a perfect segue to the topic of temperature and its impact on deciding the best gin cocktails to have. Summer heat is always a great time to enjoy a gin cocktail. Why? The ingredients are refreshing like a cool breeze after a hard, day working on projects in the hot sun. The same is true for that first taste of a hot drink to banish the chill of a cold winters night. Even when most cocktails are cold, the sensations each offers have a way of taking the temperature from something we endure to a level we embrace, particularly when we employ the MOST method of selecting the best gin cocktails.
So, whatever the mood, occasion, season, or temperature, you now can go boldly forth and request your best and favorite gin cocktail.
The following are some gin cocktails according to MOST. You will probably want to visit one of the many distilleries in Wisconsin afterward, to enjoy that cocktail. Cheers!
Best Gin Cocktails using MOST
Is there really a bad time to drink a gin cocktail? Probably not. However, selecting the best one is possible when using the MOST formula. The following list highlights the majority of popular gin cocktails with MOST suggestions:
Gimlet - Served in a chill ed classic cocktail glass. Mood is formal and sophisticated. Occasion could be a wedding, high-level business conference or event where people wear their finest clothing. A gimlet can transcend seasons and temperature.
Gin martini - Another for the formal and sophisticated aspect of mood. Gin martini occasions include wedding/anniversaries, after the business meeting/power lunch or after a show. Martinis also have no season but may be best in cooler temperatures.
Singapore Sling - Mood would border on informal and a typical occasion could be a gathering of friends or a meet up after work. Fall and spring are great seasons for Singapore Slings, particularly when the temperature is on the coolish side
Last Word - The mood tends to be semi-form -al and fits with a wide range of occasions. Its traditional gin (juniper) flavor combined with a splash of lime juice adds a whole new dimension that lends itself to late spring through early fall and warmer temperatures to provide a refreshing taste.
Negroni - The mood turns again towards a higher level of sophistication with the Negroni. Its flavors compliment occasions from weddings to semi-formal parties. Negroni is another with no dependence on season or temperature.
Mulled Sloe Gin - Perfect when the mood is intimate and relaxed. Mulled sloe gin is something you share in front of a fireplace on a cold winter evening or after a day on the slopes.
Hackney Homebrew - See mulled sloe gin.
Gin & Tonic - Some cocktails resist being pigeonholed into a certain category. The gin and tonic is that cocktail. It defies mood, occasion, season, and temperature, although, I still prefer it on hot summer days.
Must you follow the MOST formula to find the best gin cocktails? Of course not. No one would (or should) look down their nose if you order a gimlet at the beach. The important overriding measure of what to drink should always be what you like best. Cheers!
